The result

A clean line, without the appointment.

Two minutes at your own table. No booking, no gel lamp, no waiting on anyone else's schedule. Just the line, and then you are out the door.

How it works

Five lines, not a steady hand.

Build a scaffold first, then fill it. The guide lines disappear under the fill, so only the shape is left.

  1. Step one, a horizontal white line drawn across the nail tip

Draw one horizontal line across the tip.

  2. Step two, a short vertical line marking the centre of the tip

Mark the centre with a short vertical line.

  3. Step three, two straight scaffold lines running from the centre down to each side of the nail

Run two lines from the centre out to each side.

  4. Step four, a curved arch drawn between the two scaffold lines

    Curve the arch between them.

  5. Step five, the french tip filled in solid white

Fill the rest in. That is the line.

Nothing is final until it dries. Wipe a wobbly line back and take it again.

The thin tapered brush drawing fine white guide lines on a nail tip

The brush

A thin tip, because a french tip needs one.

The brush is the product. It is cut thin and tapered to a point, not the wide flat paddle that comes in an ordinary polish. A wide brush cannot draw a line narrower than itself, which is why the french tip you paint with one comes out thick and approximate.

This one lays down a hairline. Thin enough to place the edge exactly where you want it, loaded enough to carry the curve in a single stroke.

  • Thin, tapered point for drawing the edge
  • Holds its shape through the full curve
  • Made for the french tip, not adapted to it

The formula

A soft white, not a stark one.

The shade is a classic soft white, chosen to read as a natural looking tip rather than a block of correction fluid across the end of your nail.

Paint it thin. The edge is the whole design, and a heavy line spreads as it settles, so two thin passes will always beat one thick one.

Over colour

It is not only for bare nails.

Over a sheer base it reads classic. Over full colour it turns whatever you already own into a tipped manicure, which is a different look every time you change what is underneath.

One bottle, the whole rest of your collection.

The look

Out in the world.

The difference is the brush.

Any white polish can make a white tip. Whether it makes a clean one is decided by what you are drawing with.

Questions

I have never painted a french tip. Can I actually do this?

That is what the five step method above is for. You are not drawing a curve freehand, you are drawing four straight guide lines and then filling between them. The shape comes from the scaffold, not from your hand being steady.

The first nail is the worst one. By the third you will have it.

What if the line goes wrong?

Nothing is final until it dries. Take it back with a brush dipped in remover, or wipe the whole nail and start again. You have as many attempts as you want, which is the part a salon appointment does not give you.

Can I use it over coloured polish?

Yes. Let the colour underneath dry fully first, then draw the tip on top. Over a sheer base it reads classic, over full colour it turns a polish you already own into a tipped manicure.

How many coats does it need?

Paint it thin. A thin pass gives a sharper edge than a heavy one, because a thick line spreads as it settles and softens the shape you just drew.

If you want it denser, let the first pass go touch dry and take a second over the top. Two thin passes beat one thick one every time.

Do I need a base coat or a top coat?

Neither is required to draw the line, but both help. A base coat under your colour stops staining and gives the polish something to hold onto. A top coat over the finished tip seals the edge so it does not chip back first.

Alouie does not sell either yet, so use whatever you already have.

What is in it? Is it vegan and cruelty free?

Vegan and cruelty free. A classic soft white, chosen to read as a natural looking tip rather than a stark block of white.

How big is the bottle?

12 ml, which is a standard full size nail polish. You are only painting the tips, so a bottle goes a long way.

What does shipping cost?
